I spent the day yesterday with one of my besties, laughing and talking for seven hours straight in San Luis Obispo. I was nourished by her company, laughter, photos from an amazing trip to Italy, melt in your mouth short-rib sandwiches, my first Aperol Spritz and more. Most of all, it was the intentional face-to-face catch-up.
This morning I meditated to Heather Demetrios’ Trust Fall With Your Writing and afterwards, I tucked myself in bed with a cup of tea and Heather’s latest newsletter. It’s currently the only newsletter I read from beginning to end. Her theme was finding time for writing during a very busy season–she has an ability to go deep and keep her offerings practical and accessible.
That, combined with a number of other readings, led me to write to you today. So what about solving the unsolvable? Do you have a situation in your life that feels impossible? Illness? Financial contraction? A labyrinthian task list? Loneliness? Pain?
Enough examples, Rebecca! Get to the point!
Bottom line, you know this and I know this: We don’t have control.
So what’s helped me thrive in the face of seemingly unsolvable situations? Letting go. Yup, Letting go.
KIDDING! I am historically the best-worst-letter-goer. Although the resources below have helped me to move from worst to mediocre and sometimes even good at letting go! Take what works and leave what doesn’t serve you.
Here are some of the practical tools (in no particular order) that have enhanced and saved my life in recent months:
- Human Garage: These folks have made free fascia classes available all over YouTube, their app and their website with the goal of helping 1 billion people heal themselves. My favorite daily practice (almost every day), is their stress reset. I prefer Jason as a teacher over Gary, but you can decide for yourself when you explore what they have to offer. I also had the privilege of taking a live workshop with hundreds of others in a breathtaking location and highly recommend it if they come your way during a world tour.
2. Milck: Milck is a brilliant creative whom I met last Sunday at the new Godmothers independent bookstore (that is ALSO proving to be a very happy place for me). I cannot stop listening to her music. Some of my favorites are: If I Ruled the World, Skin and Oh My My. I encourage you to check out her work. Here’s a sample:
3. Michael B. Beckwith: Dr. Beckwith has helped me let go through his books, Take Back Your Mind podcast, videos and so much more. I just finished 21 days of meditation with him using a free month on the SOAAK app. I also had the privilege of attending a service at Agape International Spiritual Center and this was what he said the day I was there:
4. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy): After years of Cognitive Based Therapy techniques and related healing modalities, this (coupled with the Human Garage fascia work) has become a game changer for removing grief and trauma from my body.
5. Miracle Celebrations: I have a journal where I track “miracles” or celebrations. Here are some examples of what I document:
- An unexpected gift of $25 from a colleague
- A call from my writing buddy to meet for a spontaneous virtual writing session at the exact time when I was wishing for her but assumed she was too busy
- The chance to meet in person with my bestie when I thought I’d have to wait months
- An act of service from my hubby who checked my tire pressure and changed the oil prior to my road trip
- Meeting Milck in person (!!!!!!) in a small opening weekend event at a new local independent bookstore which I only stumbled upon because I was tracking a loved one on maps
- Rain two days in a row in my drought state
- The delicious salsa gifted to us from my friend’s beau
- A good night’s sleep after several too early wake-ups
- An amazing vet clinic who helped my fur baby
- A normal Mammogram result
Frankly, the fact that I am writing a blog post today is its own kind of miracle. I’m hope this is helpful in some way to you! I have LOTS more resources but I will stop here so I can go on a muddy hike! (Walking has been another key lifesaver.) As far as my writing, I am submitting my Selma manuscript to two new agents once I get feedback from some fresh readers and I’m working on two other books right now. One is an adult heist novel with a mystical twist and the other is a non-fiction book which will help you live in the world. To that end, I “accidentally” created a related substack this morning. Stay tuned once I figure out what I’m doing there. Yes, yes I am laughing as I write this. Remember you are LOVED for who you are in this very moment. Breathe in that thought and exhale gratitude. The world needs you in it.
