Your Heart: A Real Estate Story

IMG_0201

What would happen if your gratitude had no limits?

What if you saw everything as a gift—as a roadmap to your happiness?

That really sounds ridiculous when someone you love is sick or depressed. Or when you are sick or depressed.

So perhaps, that’s not exactly what I’m saying.

Perhaps we break everything into tiny weeny nano moments.

What if the way you squeeze her hand and remember how much love is coursing between you becomes a little faerie window into thank you?

And what if you take the time to let the anger at God and the world and cancer and job layoffs and alcoholism and abandonment and abuse and all those things that look and feel rotten run through you?

What if you really let yourself feel them for a few minutes? What if you let them move out of the pain in your neck or back or belly?

Then what if you said “Get out of me!” And then those feelings left. Even for a moment.

How would you feel? Empty? Scared? What would you rage against? What’s your anchor? Don’t worry, they promise to come back. They know how to ring your bell.

For now, let there be an empty space.

And let me fill it.

Let me fill it with the bouquet of flowers from my heart.

And notice what’s around you. Use what you have if you have it: sight, sound, smell, touch and taste.

And there’s a sixth sense when you close your eyes or when they are open. Just take it in. The singular moment of you being kind to your own heart. The dictionary calls singular: extraordinary, remarkable, exceptional, unusual or strange, odd, different, separate, individual. Watch this moment like a TV show because you picked the channel.

Then let me know the inside of your deepest desires to be a figure skater, to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro to win your league softball championship.

To find true love.

You’ve got it.

You found it.

There’s an opening in your heart.

It’s where all the sadness lived. It needs some sprucing up. A little DIY creativity.

Start by taking yourself out on a glorious date.

Get dressed in what suits you. Comfy jeans and red socks. Fancy pants, a twirly skirt, a bright red tie, comfy converse.

Bring some music on your headphones or a journal and a pen.

Bring some cash. At least enough for a beautiful cup of coffee, tea or maybe some bubbly.

And sit. Sit alone with your heart.

How might you decorate that gorgeous space you’ve been waiting to move into all these years?

Put the SOLD sign up.

It’s yours.

From now on, you get to decide who is allowed in.

And then when you allow someone in, you can say what my grandmother Mama Chelo used to say to me, “You live in my heart and you don’t even pay rent.”

You do.

IMG_0993

A little post script: When those feelings come back and ring your doorbell, knock on your door or try to climb through the window, see them. Mine come in the form of shoulder blade pain on my right side, mostly. Mine say, “Hey, you better make sure you get everything done and plan for every possible viable scenario so you are prepared. And you’ve only done it well if you get exhausted while doing it.” So I say “hi” to my shoulder blade. And here’s what follows, “I see you. And this right here, right now may feel familiar, but actually it’s not then, it’s now. What’s now, based on the evidence all around me is quite simply a task I need to do, or learn. It’s a conversation I need to have. It’s a question I need to ask because I don’t know the answer. But thank you for reminding me to do it. I don’t need to be scared or anxious or feel unworthy or like I need to keep the peace because I have it.” By then my anxiety and my shoulder blade are so bored by my conversation, they’ve left and I can get back to what I was doing.

The Fun Starts Here!

image

I’m so happy today I could not wait to write to you. I woke at 5:55am which was really 4:55am and today feels like New Year! In fact, for many of us, it is!

Today some very fun creative explosions start! It’s Art Every Day Month and it’s National Novel Writing Month or NaNoWriMo! Both are free!

You can read about Art Every Day month started by Leah Piken Kolidas’ here. She started it a decade ago inspired by NaNoWriMo! There are even rules which are made to be broken! Those are my kind of rules. You can write, draw, take photos on your phone, color, sculpt, just create.

I’m starting Book 2 of Selma’s Truth and Magic Series today for National Novel Writing Month! You can sign up here if you’d like to join me: http://nanowrimo.org.

There are of course, fun ways to share your progress in social media and in other places, but if you are introvert (like me, yes, yes I have the Myers-Briggs results to prove it), you may want to do this on your own or with one or two friends.

Spread the word because there’s real research demonstrating the importance of creativity to our own vitality and life. It’s central to making us tick. Before some of you tell me, “I’m not creative like that,” listen to this interview between Brené Brown and Elizabeth Gilbert. (If kids are around, put in headphones due to some adult language.) I know I’ve shared this one before, it’s that good.

I also want to share some exciting news about my novel, The Amazing Adventures of Selma Calderón, A Globetrotting Magical Mystery of Courage, Food & Friendship:

  1. Discounted Signed Copies for Teacher Gifts and the Holidays: Individual copies are $12, but if you want to gift signed copies of the book to 20 or more people, it’s $10 each plus shipping. And 10-19 signed copies are $11 each plus shipping. I have one mom who ordered the 20 copies in the photo below and she is including a printed copy of my recent Huffington Post interview. It’s easy to order! Just send an email to team@rebeccavillarreal.com with the number of books and the mailing address and we’ll take it from there!

  1. Teaching For Change to receive 5% of the proceeds from Selma: I’m so excited that we announced my commitment to donate 5% of the net profits from Selma to Teaching for Change through 2016. And I’ll keep giving back to organizations benefitting youth in perpetuity, as in forever! Read the news story here and the official press release here. If you know of any media outlets, blogs, newsletter or websites that might be interested in this story, please share. I would love to inspire more authors to do the same. The novel is available everywhere, and I’m thrilled to share that you can purchase it directly from Teaching for Change’s online catalogue as well. It’s an honor to be included!

  1. Dharma Blazers Interview: Wowie Zowie! The amazing motorcyle-riding yogini Carrie Hensley interviewed me for her Dharma Blazers interview series. She published it last night and sent the interview to her community around the world. “Dharma” means life purpose. Carrie illuminated things for me about my own life purpose that were completely new to me. We laughed a lot. I shared in ways, I’ve never done in a recorded interview. I hope you brew a cup of something delicious, sit down and join us. You can view the interview here. She also included a link to a recorded meditation I shared on this blog to help you start your day with a playful heart (as opposed to a racing heart thanks to your to-do list). I got to know Carrie when I participated in her 30 Day Yoga Un-challenge. After more than twenty years of doing yoga at home, she is the best teacher I’ve ever had—kind, gentle and yet just the right amount of helping me stretch literally and figuratively! She offers a free 20 minute AM and PM yoga classes when you sign up for her newsletter in case you want to check her out.

  1. Huffington Post interview: Sometimes there’s a pebble in the water that creates ripples. For me, this interview was it. Dr. Brandi Megan Granett, a fellow author, asked such insightful questions. And my favorite part: there’s a focus on my grandmother, Mama Chelo, who was born Consuelo Calderón. She lived until age 105 which is why my novel is for ages 10-105. You can read the interview here. (And I also have to thank my sister-in-law who struck up a conversation with Brandi at her delectable restaurant, Thai Tida, and handed over her personal copy!) Kindness and magic abound!

  1. Recipes, Magic and Fun: We are gearing up to share recipes, ways to bring magic into your every day life and more inspiring content for readers. I’d love to invite you over to play at: rebeccavilarreal.com. You can sign up for my e-newsletter which I’ll send out every couple of weeks.

Finally, today is the birthday of one of my best friends in the world: Amheric! I wrote this 1 minute and 43 second video poem, New Month, for him a few years ago. I thought you might use it to help you kick off an amazing month!

Thanks for visiting with me this Sunday. And a special thanks for sharing so much Selma love! I’d be grateful if you would add Selma’s magical word #cucalacas to your posts. I want to remember to do the same!

I’m going to make some breakfast now. Remember how much I love you because there is only ONE you and the world needs your smile, your gifts and your big golden heart!

Making Your Dreams Real & 100 Thank Yous!

Readers and beautiful ones! I want to say thank you for buying more than 100 copies of The Amazing Adventures of Selma Calderón: A Globetrotting Magical Mystery of Courage, Food & Friendship! Since we published the book on August 8, I set a goal of selling 100 books by September 30. Whether you bought one, told someone about it or shared it on social media, thank you! You can read all about why I wrote the book on my new website here. If you want to know the answer to “What if you could travel the world, go back in time, and eat your favorite foods along the way, all the while unraveling the mystery of your missing parents?” click here.

I’ve written this post with so much love and a desire to visit with you via video. That’s why I’ve compiled moments in the journey all together in this post. More than anything I hope this inspires you to go for your own dreams. No desire is too big or too small! That’s why I included a never-before-seen video of my own vision wall at the end. Here’s an appreciation video I made for you during my lunch break.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, this beautiful story took me ten years to finish. To take you back to the moment we published the book, I’m sharing a video of me popping the cork to celebrate.

Here’s another video we created the weekend of publication which includes a delicious sweet potato pancake cooking lesson thanks to my favorite Life is Messy Kitchen cookbook by the amazing entrepreneur Mayi Carles.

It’s been so rewarding to read a mom’s Facebook post telling me that her daughter is staying up wait too late because she can’t stop reading Selma. And for a reader to send me this picture saying that she made a date night just for herself alone to read the book.

Selma Eat and Read Party

The reviews have been amazing! Here are some excerpts:

As soon as I started reading about Selma, I was hooked! — KC

I have fallen in love with Selma, her friends, family and adventures. Each page of this wonderful story takes you on a magical journey filled with love. This is a story you will want to share with the entire family. I can’t wait to find out where Selma takes us next. — Margaret S. Edwards

Kazmierczak

Thoughtful, engaging and delightful–your entire family will enjoy this page-turner! – Jaqueline M. Crocetta

I set aside an evening to dive into this delectable book and fell in love immediately with the cast of characters. Selma’s got a big heart and a mischievous streak that lands her in a spot of bother more often than not. I loved being on this journey with Selma, Guadey, and Hurley & Uli. And I honestly can’t wait for more. I think kids of ALL ages will enjoy this magical journey! –Linda Stockton

I was transported near and far, and imagined myself taking all of these adventures with Selma and her family & friends. It made me laugh a lot, it made me cry a little and it definitely left me wanting for a sequel. –J. Sullivan

Selma and her companions will be in several Christmas stockings this year. Hopefully, we will not have to wait long for a sequel! –Juliann Uritus

Creating Your Own Vision and Making Your Dreams Real

And here’s the treat I promised at the top of this post. Remember how I moved across country from Chicago to California? That was part of a very big and beautiful dream I held for 20 years. I kept wishing for it and working toward it.

A key step in getting me closer to how I wanted my life to look was to forgive others and myself any and all hurts and disappointments. It sounds simple and we know it’s not but it clears the way for so much yes in your life. I wrote a post about forgiveness here and shared resources related to forgiveness here.

The other way was to constantly declare my intentions either to my loved ones or to my broader family here on this blog. You saw me apply for a scholarship and very nervously and excitedly declare that I’d finish the book. The other thing I did was surround myself with images that supported my dream. Here is an intimate tour of my giant vision wall while which was built over time at my home in Chicago.

Everyone has a recommended approach to visualizing your best future. You are the best judge of that. Monday, October 12 is the new moon. No matter what you believe in the world, we all live in the same one. Here’s what I’d like to share about this moment: You are worthy. As we move into a new phase, take a moment to sit with that. You deserve joy, happiness and a rich life. Think about how you want to feel.*

One recent interview I enjoyed which helped me break through some of my own fears, is this “Big Strong Magic” interview by author Elizabeth Gilbert of researcher and storyteller Brené Brown. If you have little ones, put on your headphones because there is some adult language in it. There’s an entire podcast series on this available on iTunes and Soundcloud. You can listen to the interview here.**

I love learning about and creating my own rituals alone and with my family. Tonight’s a great night to do that. Or tomorrow night with the new moon. What if you took some time to write down a few old hurts rip them up and toss them in the trash then write some new gratitude lists or wishes for your new beginning? I’m on Day 53 of a #yearofgratitude. You can follow my journey on Instagram and start your own journey!

Please keep sharing your Selma love with her magical hashtag #cucalacas!

Thank you again for your generosity in helping my dreams come true. I hope my vision wall and these words open up a bright space for you to reflect and set some intentions for your best life ever!

With love and gratitude,

Rebecca

*P.S. A fun free tool to help you visualize how you want to feel is the Desire Map Core Desired Feelings library and graphic maker. I used the latter for my vision wall.

**P.P.S. I can’t help but encourage you to read Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert and Rising Strong by Brené Brown. If you visit Brené’s site, watch her brief book trailer video including the Manifesto of the Brave and Brokenhearted. And I can’t help sharing her interview on Oprah’s Super Soul Sunday. I broke through some MAJOR fear when I watched it. Enjoy!

Unearth Your Story: Equinox Love

What do you hope to uncover from nature’s story?

What I mean is, when you look at a weed, do you think it doesn’t belong or do you see the possibility of growth through the cracks in the cement?

Have you ever wished for the white picket fence and found yourself on the outside looking in?

There are secrets to be uncovered every day within your surroundings.

Some people like to call it grace. Some people celebrate and call it divine inspiration. Wednesday, September 23 is the Equinox, when night and day are in equal measure. I’ve heard it called Thanksgiving for and to Mother Earth.

What if we took a chance on a ritual in the present moment to breathe in deeply and watch the leaves move in the wind?

Or maybe simply to touch the earth? At what point can we find reverence in this day and mark it as the beginning of reverence for every day? What do you need to feel about longing? What do you need to feel the right to grow roots and sprout?

Perhaps it’s a return to something you love. Perhaps it’s simply a walk outside. I’m inviting you to step away from your routine and marvel at the wonder of the world.

Happy Equinox!

Love,

What’s inside your marble jar?

IMG_0104

Friends, I’ve missed you. I’ve been in the midst of two of the biggest leaps of my life: publishing my novel (after 10 years) and moving across country.

As my feet sink into the soil here, I have started something with my family at the suggestion of a friend. We have marble jars.  I’ve picked a few “either or” habits I’d like to start. Here’s what’s on the back of my door.

IMG_0254

After about one month, I’ve added 10 push ups or 10 burpees or 30 abs daily. When I do these things, I get a marble in the jar.

When it’s filled, I pick a prize of my choosing. Prizes are fun, especially when you get to choose them.

Here’s a video I made for you about the marble jars.

Where do you start?

I have three resources for you

#1 – This Zen Habits article is the BEST short and simple article I’ve ever read on getting healthy. I have about 8 friends who are trying this approach with me. Think about inviting a few folks to join you if the post speaks to you.

# 2 This Zen Pencils comic moved me like nobody’s business. Here’s a snapshot of just the beginning:

FullSizeRender-4

To view the full comic by Gavin Aung Than, click here. The basic idea is to ask what your world would be like if you took 10-15 minutes a day to do something you love. I saw Gavin speak two years ago at the World Domination Summit in Portland. If you have a moment and want some inspiration, check out this video about Gavin and Zen Pencils too.

#3 Carrie Hensley’s free 30-day yoga un-challenge is a gentle way to introduce yoga into your life for 10-15 minutes per day. I’ve been doing it for four days. Every day, I learn something new, not just about a yoga position, but also about breathing and not judging myself. This is a great way to introduce yourself to yoga because she gives lots of options for adjusting poses to your comfort level. The videos are all in one place so you can see them from day 1. You can sign up here.

That’s it folks. Grab a jar, a box, something and toss a penny, a marble, a paperclip into it.

Trust me when I tell you that you’ll remember your habits.

And there may be days when you pass on your habits and that’s okay too.

So what do you think you’ll find inside that marble jar when it’s filled up? A healthy, happy you?

Sending you love, marbles and a big prize!

Selma is out! Please #TellTwo

Today is the day! The Amazing Adventures of Selma Calderón: A Globetrotting Magical Mystery of Courage, Food & Friendship is published!

Will you please do me a favor? Will you #TellTwo people who you think will enjoy the book? I’m hoping to share Selma’s adventures all around the globe. You can use Selma’s hashtag #cucalacas – it’s her magical word! The novel is for ages 10-105. And 5% of all net profits are donated to organizations benefiting youth.

“Even though this book is written towards young teens, it pulled me in from the first page. I was transported near and far, and imagined myself taking all of these adventures with Selma and her family & friends. It made me laugh a lot, it made me cry a little and it definitely left me wanting for a sequel.” – J. Sullivan

What’s the novel about?

What if you could travel the world, go back in time, and eat your favorite foods along the way, all the while unraveling the mystery of your missing parents?

Recently moved to Chicago, fifth-grader Selma Calderón wants to use her magic to explore the world. She’s planning trips to Paris to taste a café au lait and a chocolate-filled croissant, to Uganda to see the mountain gorillas with her best friend, Hurley, and to Spain to visit the Alhambra palace. But she’s not supposed to use magic without permission from Guadey, her guardian, not even to do her homework, or to deal with the school bully, or to uncover the mystery of her parents who went missing when she was two.

Will Selma finally discover the truth about her parents and get to learn more magic, or will her impatience land her in some deep time-travel trouble?

You'll visit the Alhambra in Spain in the novel.

You’ll visit the Alhambra in Spain in the novel.

These photos are from my own travels to the same places Selma visits. Thank you so much for supporting me and Selma. And please, if you have a dream, take measured steps to make it happen. It feels so good and you’re worth it!

Will Selma get to visit the endangered Mountain Gorillas in Uganda?

Flim Flam!

Flim Flam by Rebecca Villarreal [painter unknown]

Flim Flam! To listen to the pronunciation, click here.

Definition: the state of chaos, mess and disarray in the face of feelings, thoughts, back spasms, flat tires, house leaks, crashed computers and all manner of nonsense. Also known as the cosmic joke; Universe and/or God and/or your higher power guiding you and/or testing you.

Have you ever been just sailing along [finally] when all of a sudden, BOOM! Everything is hitting the fan? You want to shake your fist in the air. You want to blame somebody. Or even better yet, how about when nothing is actually wrong but your thoughts and feelings make you feel unsafe or irritated with anyone who doesn’t see the world the way you do? That, my friends, is Flim Flam! I had Marge record it for you. Who’s Marge? She’s the voice in my head, kind of like Pinocchio’s Jiminy Cricket. But, Marge is usually right. After the fact, when I’ve over-planned or tried to anticipate every single scenario, she says, “See, that was just a bunch of Flim Flam! You didn’t have to put all that energy into worrying.”

The voice in your head may sound different.

Flim Flam has been incredibly helpful to me because it reminds me to LAUGH. Monica Garcia, of Divine Light Coaching, first coined the term, intonation and all. Here’s an example of recent Flim Flam action in my life: I was in the mix of preparing to move across country in late June. I had planned for a year. We had our mover, realtor, new school, new home all lined up. Right in the final weeks when work was busy, boxes still needed to be packed and final doctor’s appointments wrapped up, I received a bizarre diagnosis of an eye condition which I’ve had my whole life without knowing. Then I got a blocked tear duct and my eye swelled up to the point where I couldn’t read and was in bed for two days. That was Flim Flam for sure. I had to step away and surrender to my very swollen eye. And say no to lots of things I thought would get done. One of my dear friends said, “Only you would get a blocked tear duct when you were having trouble saying goodbye to people.” And I had to laugh at the sheer absurdity of the situation.

But then what? What if you struggle with the laugh? What if you’re so angry or disappointed about whatever is going wrong?

You want to blame yourself for the car breaking down because you never get regular maintenance check ups.

You can’t believe you missed another deadline at work because you just can’t get organized.

You writhe with guilt when buying a pair of shoes that you actually need to wear on your feet.

You look down at your belly and you feel disgust that you can’t keep the weight off. Ugh.

Sometimes it’s hard to see the cosmic joke. Sometimes it’s hard to find Marge. That’s shame, baby. And some of us feel it from ourselves, families, friends, colleagues and our communities of worship. Or it can happen just watching television. Why didn’t I invent the Pillow Pets? I’d be a millionaire by now!

One opportunity to address those feelings starts on August 8. It’s an e-course called Break the Toxic Shame Cycle: Become Your Best Self. The basic idea is to lighten your load by letting go of your old ways of looking at the world and healing your heart so that you can spend time and energy on what’s really important to you. The instructor is Maria Rodriguez, a clinical social worker, who over the last 28 years has amassed an astounding body of knowledge culminating in this e-course. She is one of the most loving people I know. Maria is kind and gentle and will help anyone on this path to freedom. Because feeling better (and not blaming and shaming yourself) means you’ll have time and energy to soar! Check out the details of Maria’s course here.

I also shared a number of additional resources on tribal shame (when family, friends and culture triggers those feelings) at the END of my post, Crack The Egg: How to Find Joy Amidst Conflicting Emotions.

So, even if we don’t have all of our triggers figured out (mine shows up in my shoulder blade), perhaps we can notice when they occur.

Then, try sitting with one of the most powerful lessons I learned from Maria last week:

“Just because I think it and feel it, doesn’t make it so.”

Or as Marge would say, “Flim Flam!”

Love Yourself: From Your Head to Your Toes

BellyLoveHeadtoToesbyRebeccaVillarreal

I just hugged a friend goodbye** with tears and said, “I’m so glad I met you.”

She answered, “I’m gladder.”

Then through a runny nose and more tears, I said “Oh baby, that there is a blog post.”

Here’s what: I’m gladder about my belly. Have you ever looked at your body and thought unkind thoughts? Critical things? Wished for someone else’s?

I became a Belly Love Warrior. That’s all right, don’t freak out. You don’t have to be a warrior, but you can think about a day when you look in the mirror and you smile. You have loving thoughts–even loving words. We’ve all seen animals and humans who are treated unkindly, even abused. It shows up in how they look and act.

As I got dressed for my son’s first communion, I changed no less than five times. And I made a commitment to talk to myself like a best friend. “You’re going to find a great outfit, sweetie. I promise you.” And I did.

That scenario, could have gone very differently.

You know why it went well? Because I signed up for Belly Love. It’s free! And you’re a lucky duck because Belly Love Day is June 21—that’s Father’s Day and it’s for guys too. You’ll get:

  1. An mp3 audio recording of a belly love practice
  2. Activities to do yourself and/or with family and friends
  3. Belly Love Recipes
  4. An opportunity to participate in a Google+ Hangout with Belly Love creator Jen Young
  5. Connection to the community of other Belly Love Day participants and more.

Sign up here. Even if you’re busy that day, you can sign up and enjoy these wonderful goodies.

I have to confess, I don’t even think I did it that well the first time. I had no discipline about it. I didn’t even open the emails in a logical fashion. But I did tell my belly every day (when I remembered), “I love you.”

When I felt like it, I listened to Jen’s meditation. I learned a lot about nutrition for my gut and about spiritual practices that were completely new to me.

And I’m going to do it again. You know why?

Because there’s real science behind it. You are made up of matter, in fact, we are all 70% water! Here’s an interview with Dr. Masaru Emoto about his study of water resonance. He illuminates the effects of positive and negative words on water. To learn more about his research visit Dr. Masaru Emoto’s site. (Here’s a free children’s book explaining the process with his actual photos of the water under various conditions.)

**I mentioned saying goodbye to a friend as I’m in the midst of manifesting one of the biggest dreams of my life and moving across country. So you can bet that I need to make sure I’m nice and loving to myself while packing and saying goodbye to so many loved ones. Who has time to look in the mirror and think negative things? It’s so much easier to say “You look amazing!”

And though I’m no expert on chakras (our energy centers), I can tell you that the 3rd chakra is located just above the belly button, the sacral center. It’s known as the seat of our power. It needs to flow up to the heart chakra. You know how sometimes you might have indigestion or digestive issues? That’s the seat of your power. Imagine, if you loved up that part of your body—above and below the belly button. At 70% water, how do you think your cells might respond? Do you think you might feel more confident? Even more powerful?

Go ahead and join me: take this chance, for free, to treat yourself kindly.

Coffee Break by Rebecca Villarreal

Loved Ones,

This is the shortest post ever. I know how busy you are. That’s why I made you this meditation. It can be done at any time of day or night. It’s just under 7 minutes. And it focuses on play! So when you take a coffee break or a walk around the block or even as you do the dishes, have a listen and remember you are loved!

You can access the meditation here. Think about bookmarking it so you can go back to it when you need a reminder to press pause on your to-do list and play. I know you’ll get more done if you take a moment for you. Trust me!

Sending you my biggest smile!
